tomato pay event: different is the new normal

On Wednesday 7th April, the tomato pay team had a great time hosting an event alongside our charity for the event, We Create Space on the meaning of self-care as an entrepreneur and business owner.

Our topic for the event: “Different is the new normal: The meaning of self-care as an entrepreneur and business owner” gave us some space to explore the different practices around self-care, the personal and professional challenges faced, and indulged in how businesses can grow and develop themselves and their team, through times of stress and uncertainty.

The incredible Michael Edward Stephens, Founder of We Create Space hosted the event and made sure that all speakers were able to share their journey throughout, giving the audience some incredible insights. Michael said: "Identity and the cultures we belong to can both reinforce those pressures and offer us a solution. It’s being able to identify the difference and lean into your strengths".

Our speakers - Transformation Coach and Consultant Maylis Djikalou, FemTech Innovator and Entrepreneur Kim Palmer, Co-founder of Startup Discovery School Mandy Nyarko and BP Launchpads People Practice Lead and Podcaster Ruth Penfold all had a lot to discuss and say throughout the nearly hour-long talk (honestly, we could have spoken much longer!).

Some key takeaways from the event:

The past year has been a test to mental, physical and emotional well-being. It has thrown more than one challenge and in turn has allowed us time to reflect on our personal and professional journey.

As a result of Covid-19, many businesses have struggled, leading to a high percentage increase of businesses either seeing a decrease in turnover or sadly closing their doors in 2020. We felt it was a good time to present an event focusing on the importance of self-care for business owners and entrepreneurs.

You can see the full video of the event, here.

It was inspiring to hear our panelists share and discuss their personal and professional experiences of self-care and to see how we as human beings have the power to see, think and change the way we view self-care.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and from the feedback, we know everyone else who attended, did too!
